Multi-room audio is still relatively new, and as a result, still somewhat expensive. Even an entry-level Sonos system will cost you around $400, and the more rooms you add, the more your price quickly ramps up. Google’s Chromecast Audio is an inexpensive option, but you’ll need to pair it with your own speakers as it just serves as a receiver.

Many home sound system options support a limited number of music streaming apps. For example, Apple’s software isn’t compatible with the Google Chromecast Audio, so that means no iTunes. Sonos and Bose both support Apple, however, which is a factor you may want to take in consideration. Other options, like Samsung’s Shape or audio|acacia, will all have their own set of applications that can and can’t be used. Be wary of buying a home sound system that is incompatible with whatever software you use.
Flexibility Matters
There’s a lot to consider when deciding what your sound needs are. Do you need a system for your TV? Do you have an existing speaker or receiver you want to use? How many rooms are you trying to connect? Some companies, like Sonos, offer soundbars for TVs, but a stand-alone device like the Chromecast Audio might be more difficult to set up for TV use. Knowing what your needs are will make your purchase easy.
