Is an OLED TV right for your home theater?
OLED, or organic light-emitting diode, technology has begun to be implemented in a whole host of electronics. What Are They?
OLED panels, unlike LED panels, emit their own light. This means that the clunky backlights found in LED TVs simply aren’t necessary. This results in uniform lighting, which reduces “hotspots,” or areas that are too bright. This also results in self-illuminating pixels, meaning you can get perfect contrast. Ever watch a plasma TV? Notice how the black levels on those TVs look truly black? That’s what an OLED can do, without the drawbacks of plasma TVs like gasses.
Why Get One For Your Home Theater?
Aside from the bump in contrast, OLED TVs are also the most responsive. They have a refresh rate as low as 0.001ms, which is around 1,000 times faster than a standard LED panel. This means a better refresh rate for gamers or movie fans in their state of the art home theater. Plus, the only OLEDs currently on the market, Sony, LG, and Panasonic’s offerings, are all going to come equipped with the best smart TV tech out. This includes 4k resolution as well as superior built-in sound.
What Else Should I Know?
If you’re on the fence about OLEDs, keep in mind it’s a new technology. It’s still pretty expensive to invest in an OLED set, even the 55 inch models usually cost upwards of $3,000. LG is pretty confident in the lifespan of their OLED models, as they run each one for around 72 hours in the factory. Keep an eye out for other companies expanding into the OLED market, as Sony’s offerings are going to be incredibly exciting.
